Polvoron is a Filipino shortbread snack or a delicacy that does not require baking and the ingredients are very affordable. This homemade version of cookies and cream Polvoron recipe is incredibly simple to prepare, making it a perfect treat for any occasion. However, it requires constant stirring to prevent the mixture from sticking to the pan and burning. Burnt ingredients can seriously affect the taste and quality of the Polvoron.
What kind of dry milk to use for Polvoron?
Although I used Carnation Instant Nonfat Dry Milk, any brand of powdered milk would do it. But it is best to use full-cream powdered milk or instant dry milk because they make it rich, creamy, and smooth. I don’t recommend using skim milk powder, as it won’t taste as good. You can even use a chocolate milk powder if you are willing to experiment.
Aside from my version of my cookies and cream recipe, you can easily customize your Polvoron by experimenting with a variety of flavorful add-ons. For instance, you can incorporate rice flakes—whether pounded or flattened crispy rice for an extra crunch or add Graham crumbs to give it a light, buttery sweetness.
Crushed nuts, such as almonds or cashews, can give a rich and nutty taste, while chocolate chips are perfect for those who enjoy a touch of luscious treat. You can even get creative with other toppings like dried fruits, flavored sprinkles, or shredded coconut to make your Polvoron uniquely your own. You can make this treat in many different ways to match any taste you like!
There are special molds for Polvoron at a specialty baking shop or any Asian grocery store. They come in different shapes, but oblong is the most common one or use any molds for candy or cake. You see, I used a round aluminum measuring cup because I couldn’t find the special mold near me.
You can store Polvoron for up to 4 weeks.
