Misua soup with sardines and chayote squash

Misua Soup with Sardines and Chayote Squash

This misua soup with sardines recipe is incredibly simple and easy to make. It is not only quick to prepare but also very budget-friendly and filling.

Why Misua is a Filipino Favorite

Misua is one of the most beloved noodles in the Philippines. It’s inexpensive and accessible, especially for hardworking Filipinos who earn just enough for daily needs.

If I had to choose, misua would be my favorite among all Filipino noodles. It’s thin and delicate once cooked, it’s soft, easy to eat, and melts in your mouth.

Filling and Perfect Any Time

This soup is surprisingly filling. It’s perfect during cold weather or even as a hearty breakfast.
Sometimes I enjoy it poured over rice, while other times I eat it on its own. And when we have buns at home, I love dipping them in the broth because it’s a perfect pairing!

You Can Use Other Noodles Too

If misua isn’t your thing, that’s totally okay! There are plenty of noodle options out there. You can substitute your favorite noodles in this recipe without any problem.

Chayote and Other Vegetable Options

Are you familiar with chayote? Or have you ever tried it? I personally love chayote because of its smooth, tender texture when cooked.

But you’re not limited to just chayote. You can use other vegetables like sweet potato leaves, opo squash, eggplant, and more. These are just a few of my favorites.

Why I Used Ligo Sardines

For this recipe, I used Ligo sardines simply because I had some left from a recent trip to the international supermarket.

But feel free to use any brand of sardines you have at home. I prefer Ligo in tomato sauce because it’s the flavor many of us Filipinos grew up.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pack misua noodles
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1 piece chayote squash, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 5 cups hot water
  • 1 small can sardines in tomato sauce (your favorite sardines)
  • 3 bouillon cubes (chicken and beef, adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat a pan over medium-high heat
  2. Melt the butter and saute the chopped onion for about 3 minutes until fragrant and slightly translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic and saute for another 1-2 minutes.
  4. Toss in the chayote slices and continue sauteing for 3 minutes to slightly soften them.
  5. Pour in the hot water, then add the misua noodles, sardines (including the sauce), and bouillon cubes. Stir gently to combine.
  6. Cover the pan and let the soup cook for 5-10 minutes, or until the chayote is tender and the misua is fully cooked.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve hot. It is delicious on its own or paired with rice or warm bread.

Pin this for later!

Hope you like this simple recipe of misua with sardines. If you’re living abroad, I hope this humble dish brings back memories of the days when your whole family shared it together back in the Philippines.
