Homemade Cheesesteak Sandwich
Did you know it’s surprisingly easy to make a homemade cheesesteak sandwich? We used to buy ours from our favorite sandwich shop, but with prices going up, we decided to start making our own at home. Not only is it budget-friendly, but we can also whip it up whenever we want.
Why Make a Homemade Cheesesteak Sandwich?
It’s super convenient for when you have guests over or need a quick, hearty snack after spending time in the garden, especially now that it’s gardening season. Instead of going out or ordering in, I can just make my own. Plus, I get to customize it without any extra charges, which means more savings!
Here is What You Need for this Sandwich
- 1 lb. beef strips
- 2 sourdough hoagie buns
- Mozzarella or provolone cheese
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 small green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 small yellow sweet pepper, thinly sliced
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
Prepare the Peppers and Onions:
- In a nonstick skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the sliced onions, green, and orange bell peppers.
- Saute until they turn golden and soft, about 5-7 minutes.
- Transfer the cooked vegetables to a covered bowl and set aside in the microwave to keep warm.
Cook the Beef:
- In the same skillet, add the beef strips.
- Stir-fry over medium-high heat until browned but still tender, around 4-5 minutes. Avoid overcooking.
- Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Assemble the Sub:
- Lower the heat and arrange shredded cheese or slices over the cooked beef in the skillet. Allow them to melt slightly.
- Scoop the cheesy beef onto the hoagie buns.
- Top with the sautéed peppers and onions.
Serve:
- Serve immediately while warm.

Substitutes
Beef – shaved beef, thinly sliced mushrooms for a vegetarian option
Hoagie bun – any hoagie rolls, French bread, or whole grain rolls
Mozzarella or provolone cheese – Swiss, cheddar, American, or pepper jack for a spicy kick
Onion – red onion, shallots, or sweet onions
Bell peppers – red or yellow bell pepper, poblano peppers for mild heat
Unsalted butter – olive oil, vegan butter, or ghee
Tips
If you want, you can lightly toast the hoagie buns with a bit of butter before assembling.
Use your choice of cheese — provolone gives a classic taste, while mozzarella provides a creamier texture. My husband always wants his with provolone while I love mine with mozzarella.
