Yema is a favorite of Filipinos especially children because of its sweet taste. It’s also very easy to make and the ingredients are super simple and won’t break the bank. This chocolate Yema candy is just one version of many others. This recipe is perfect for indulging in a sweet treat or sharing with your family and friends.
What is Yema?
Yema is a classic Filipino sweet candy made from a combination of three ingredients – condensed milk, egg yolks, and butter. Yema comes from the Spanish word for “yolk”. It only takes 3 ingredients to make a Yema, and the others are optional. Feel free to add if you would like to. It’s a delicious snack and also a good startup business.
Chocolate Yema ingredients
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 can (14 oz) condensed milk
- 3 pcs egg yolks
- chocolate syrup
- sprinkles
- granulated sugar
- chocolate morsels, optional
Instructions
- Preheat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat.
- Then, melt the butter.
- Add the condensed milk, egg yolks, and chocolate syrup to a desired rich dark color.
- Stir constantly using a whisk until it thickens or clings together. Then, it should be done.
- Transfer to a parchment paper and let it cool down completely.
- Grease your hand lightly with butter or oil to prevent the Yema from sticking.
- Scoop a desired portion of the mixture and shape it into balls.
- Dredge the balls with your favorite sprinkles or toppings.
Store or wrap
- You can wrap each Yema ball with colorful cellophane if you have it available.
- Store in an airtight container. Yema lasts 5 days to a week at room temperature.
